Sparking Up Some Fun
By: April Wise
On Saturday November 16th, 2019, HIWT hosted a High School
Workshop with students from Centerville and Northridge High Schools
ranging from freshman to seniors. Students were given a lesson on
proper safety & PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) use followed by
a brief discussion on the Gas Metal Arc Welding process. They were
given a breakdown on everything from all the parts and functions of a
welding machine, how to set the settings, what positions they would
be doing and the proper techniques. The students got to have 2 hours
of practice time in a booth to get familiar with the process with HIWT
Director of Skill Education, Charlie Carpenter and HIWT Instructors
Michael Mariana and Ryan Stenger coming around and assisting. After
lunch they had the option to select a project to build (cow, horse, eagle
pig or airplane) to show the skills they had learned. All students had
a great time and really showed off their new welding skills with their
projects.
