Armenia “Aka” Bohumyla Pereyma, internationally known
artist and artist coordinator for the Welding for Artists
Program at Hobart Institute of Welding Technology passed
away peacefully on December 9, 2013.

Of Ukrainian origin, Aka and her husband, Dr. Constantin
Pereyma, settled in Troy Ohio in 1959 and soon became
active members of the community. She enhanced her natural
talent for art first in Brooklyn, New York, followed by studies
at the Dayton Art Institute and the Art Institute of Chicago.
Aka worked with many artistic mediums. She was honored
by the Ohio Arts Council and received a citation from the
Ukrainian Government for her contributions to the richness
of Ukrainian culture in the world.

In 1967, Richard Stankiewicz, known for his welded
sculptures of found objects, was invited to lead a two-week
workshop for artists. Aka participated in several workshops
and became artist coordinator, bringing several resident artists
to Troy. While leaving the teaching of welding skills to the
Institute instructors, Aka stimulated discussion in bridging
the gap between the industrial and aesthetic uses of welding.
The Welding for Artists Program at HIWT would have never
been such a success without her skillful teachings in the
coordination of welding and art. She embraced the program
with zealousness and with great passion. The picture above Several of Aka’s works of art are visible in the Troy landscape
shows Aka visiting HIWT the last time in February 2010 at throughout the downtown area and her influence on the art
the occasion of the opening of the Hobart Gallery of Welding world, as well as in the Troy area, made a great impact on
            History. many people.
