Janet Takes On MIG Basic
By Janet Piechocki So I got a chance to take the (GMAW) MIG class this summer
and had been looking forward to it for quite some time. Over the
years prior to working at Hobart, I had taken quite a few classes
there. Some of my classes were related to my degree in welding
technology and some were related to work but I had never had the
pleasure of taking the MIG class until now.
It was defnitely a challenge since we dont get a lot of hood time
while we are out on the road, but I managed to pass all my bend
tests (2G, 3G and 4G on 3/8 plate). I was a little shaky on my
overhead root, but managed a good bend even though the frst try
looked like a cat stuck in a fence (whiskers). Funny thing is I knew
what mistakes I was making and what I needed to do to correct it
but tell that to the hand! It just goes to show how important it is to
train your hands and not just your head.
I am reminded how professional and knowledgeable our instructors
are and I dont just say that because they are my co-workers. Every
class I have ever taken at Hobart has been like that regardless of
who the instructor was. As a student, I can say we have a very
caring group of instructors that Get it. They know your struggles in
acquiring the skills you need to be a good welder and they have the
ability to walk and talk you through it until you get it. Thanks to Kim
and Zane, I fnished and am looking forward to another class when I
get the chance.
