and went on
to attend Appalachian State University.
He also attended Hobart Institute of
Welding Technology and earned a diploma
in Combination Structural and Pipe
Welding. His rambling took him deeper
into the wilderness through raft guiding,
biology technician and general handyman
assignments. He was finalizing his career
in the welding trade at O’Neal’s Steel in
Greensboro at the time of his passing.
Derrick obtained the prestigious honor of
Eagle Scout and was a Second Degree
Black belt. Hiking, camping and communing
with nature continued to fill his time not
dedicated to work. Songs he wrote to
recount his adventures filled the nights
around campfires, and they will continue to
be played by the family.
