The Sky Is The Limit
By Dominic Campitiello
My family is composed of what many would consider
“workaholics.” At a young age I began working at my family’s
plumbing company, and continued to do so throughout high school
to keep some money in my pocket. Upon graduation, I attended
Rockland Community College full-time while plumbing on the days
that I would have off. After receiving my Associate Degree, I had
to make a choice whether I would continue school to further my
progress towards a Bachelor Degree or enhance my knowledge in
the construction industry. When I decided that I wanted to focus on
construction, I was able to narrow my options to whether I would
continue working at the family business or venture into something
more unfamiliar such as welding; something that had always
fascinated me. After some time, I decided that I wanted to learn
more about welding so I began doing research on where I would
receive the best education. In 2014, I attended Hobart Institute of
Welding Technology in Troy, Ohio and enrolled in the structural and
pipe welding program. In just 9 months, I received multiple AWS®
certifications and felt confident not only in my welding abilities,
but also in the career path that I had chosen. Ultimately, I secured
a job with The Local 580 Iron Workers Union in New York City and
I am optimistic for the future because of how much opportunity
there is to grow and hone my skills as a welder. An added bonus is
the gratifying feeling that comes with building skyscrapers in the
greatest city in the world.
