College Life- Living on your own.
Going off to college is full of unknowns but loaded with excitement for students and
parents alike. Parents want to make sure that their son or daughter is being left in a safe
environment that minimizes their worries. One of the most frequently asked questions we
get is Does HIWT provide housing?
Hobart Institute of Welding Technology is a college located in the Midwest that offers a
welcoming community and plentiful housing options. If you are considering enrolling in the
Institute, please visit our website (www.welding.org) for our extensive housing list. For
years we have partnered with the community of Troy who has opened their homes to welding
                                             students.
When I enrolled in the Institute back in the 80s, I was coming from Tucson, Arizona and
By Scott A. Mazzulla, President had no clue how I was to live on my own, especially at the age of 18. My family had pre-

arranged a sleeping room in Troy but I quickly learned that it was just too small of a place.
After a couple of days looking around, I was able to establish an apartment in Troys east
side. The apartment was more expensive, so I had to fnd a part-time job that seemed like full-time after going to HIWT during the day and
            needing to work at night.
The apartment came with challenges like NO furniture! So off to Goodwill I went and for $30 I was able to outft the place with a green
couch, a green chair, old worn out coffee table, dining set and a couple bent lamps without bulbs. And BAM, there we were a home at
college. For sleeping, I was able to afford a $10.00 blow up mattress and with the bedding I brought with me, I was living like a welding
            king.
Excited to start school on that frst Monday, I left my apartment 45 minutes early. I wanted to beat all the Troy traffc to make sure I was
not late for my frst day at HIWT. After hitting every red light in town and avoiding the nonexistent bumper to bumper traffc, I was able to
make my Welding Technology and Blueprint Reading class, my total commute less than 10 minutes.
There is a lot to be said about going to college in a small and safe community like Troy, Ohio as it simply reduces any risk and worries to
            both parent and student.
Troy, Ohio provided me with core amenities like restaurants, pharmacies, entertainment and there were local students that introduced us to
fshing spots, off-road tracks, and properties to hunt. In 2018-2019 Troy, Ohio was named as one of the best hometowns by Ohio Magazine.
Troy boasts a community rich with culture and incredible outdoor activities including the annual Troy Strawberry Festival.
Troy, Ohio, with 25,000 residents, is like Mayberrys big brother - classic Midwest living with four seasons and a strong family culture.
Hobart Institute of Welding Technology is Troys only homegrown college and we are proud to be part of this great community.
Just a fnal memo, upon my graduation from HIWT and moving out of my apartment I returned all the furniture I purchased from Goodwill
