Single Focus Education for 90 Years - 1930-2020
2020 will be Hobart Institute of Welding Technology’s 90th year of educating welders. Being
founded in 1930 and obtaining its 501(c)3 nonprofit status in 1940, it remains today committed,
more than ever, to training the world’s best welders. This historic anniversary made me question
the Institute’s success, as to “why” and “how” this prestigious school has thrived for this many
years?
People: Obviously the Institute has had many talented people committed to welding education
that have educated and inspired many generations of welders. Our instructors experience is
industry diverse, and as welders themselves, they know it takes welders to train welders. But I
wanted to look at some of the focus and tools that have delivered welding careers to so many.
It starts with the student. It’s their desire to become a welder to earn a good wage and grow a
successful career with a lifelong skill. So how has HIWT been able to help deliver that drive?
-Hobart Institute of Welding Technology is a single focused institute for the welding industry. By Scott A. Mazzulla, President
Our entire Institute’s energy serves the students, public and its mission to train welders and Hobart Institute of Welding Technology
welding professionals. All we do is talk welding – we do not talk HVAC, we don’t talk Diesel
Mechanics we don’t talk CNC – while those are certainly fine career paths, just not here. Here we
are 100% welding focused.
-Job placement rates at HIWT are currently recorded at 93% to the ACCSC. Sure, a
strong job market in a field in great demand with an incredible shortage certainly helps
that cause. However these statics clearly show the quality of education our students
receive. At 93%, it proves that our methods and education we provide is what
employers need and want.
-Our welding curriculum and course work provided at the Institute is 100% job
relevant. It’s created with an extreme amount of hands on job practices, the right
balance of lecture instruction, knowledge testing and workplace expectations (safety,
housekeeping, attendance, attitude etc.). The high value here is curriculum with the
career relevancy, that connection is vital.
-Valuable industry credentials: We strive for a strong connection between delivery of
education and careers. The education received is more valuable when tied directly to
welding jobs. We make sure we deliver high value industry credentials (certifications)
that employers recognize and embrace. The ability to achieve multiple skill based
certifications makes the students very marketable.
-Relationships are paramount. Our career development team is highly integrated
from start to finish. An example of that starts with a high school visit, HIWT tour,
orientation, job networking, employment and graduation. During the course of our
programs it’s imperative that we stay engaged with our students to talk industry, jobs
and careers.
This gets summarized simply on the ning the worl
Institute’s purpose which is to EDUCATE
and INSPIRE. We educate and inspire all,
especially the next generation of welders. 90 Y ders
