A Long Way from Home

            By: Janet Piechocki
A great group of guys and gals from Maryland decided to
enhance their welding career, so they registered for the
Combination Structural and Pipe Welding Program at Hobart
Institute of Welding Technology. Initially they got their start
at Dorchester Career and Technology Center in Cambridge,
MD. Their instructor, Mr. Chris Baker, shared his passion for
welding with them and soon their love for the field grew as
well. Mr. Baker’s enthusiasm for teaching is evident in the
way his students talk about him and the things that they
have done at their career center.
These super-charged students are already planning their
careers in welding after they graduate. They have had the
opportunity to meet and talk to many employers about From left to Right: Richard Webster, Zoe Baynard,
potential employment during HIWT job fairs which will Dylan Doll, Dylan Hodges, Thomas Jones
help guide their decision of where they will go. Richard Not pictured: Abbi Lord
and Thomas plan on going to the
            pipeline. Dylan Doll would like
to travel, Zoe wants to work for
            NASA and Dylan Hodges would
like to go to work at a shipyard
and work in the fab shop. Where
ever they decide to go, they
will have a good foundation for
breaking into the field of welding.
