HIWT Visits Troy High School
By: April Wise
It was a delightful and eye opening day for the students at Troy
High School on February 24th. April Wise and Melinda Jeffery
visited the high school with both the Miller Augmented Arc and
Lincoln Vtrex Engage virtual reality welders. This was a prelude
to the workshop that was scheduled for March 21st for Troy HS
kids who had never been exposed to welding. The visit was
educational and interesting with several kids trying their hand at
virtual welding. Students asked a lot of questions about what
welding was, what a career in welding would be like and how
to get into it. Some students we spoke with had no idea what
the Institute was or that we were located in their backyard of
Troy, OH. Many of the students made multiple passes with the
welders, competing to get a better score then their friends had
gotten. Even some of the Troy High School teachers and the
Principal gave it a go. This brought out the competitive nature
in many students who then decided they needed to see if they Students and Teachers try test their Skill at Welding
could best their teacher’s and principal’s score.
“It is so rewarding seeing students get excited about a trade they knew nothing about”
stated HIWT Career Development Coordinator and HIWT Alum April Wise. “My dad was
a millwright so I knew about the skilled trades growing up. It is sad that kids don’t get
exposure to the careers that are available in these fields. I think our trip to Troy High School
gave students something else to consider when deciding on a career path.”
