            By: Janet Piechocki
Colton Houston, a 2016 graduate of Hobart Institute of Welding
Technology and a member of UA local 10 Richmond, VA., won
the pipe welding portion of the annual UA apprenticeship
contest held at Washtenaw Community College in Ann Arbor,
MI. Colton knew from the time he was in high school and saw
pipe liners out in the front of his house welding, that he wanted
to be a part of it all. He has learned so much about welding in
his time at HIWT and under the mentorship of Steve Martin. Colton Houston with his finished product
The UA International Apprenticeship Competition, which is
held annually, brings together the best of the best apprentices.
During this 5 day competition there are instructor classes going
on as well. There were five categories of apprentices competing
in Welding, HVAC, Plumbing, Pipe fitting and Sprinkler Fitters.
It was a grueling week long experience for all competitors
involved in the contest, some coming from as far as Australia.
Business manager, Steve Martin and a few local members from
local 10 were there to support Colton.
There were six people that competed in the pipe welding portion of the contest, including
another Hobart Institute of Welding Technology graduate, Patrick Harris. Patrick is with UA
Local 208 out of Denver, CO. Patrick and Colton actually graduated from HIWT during the same
year in 2016. Patrick also competed in and won the welding portion of the “Best Copper Project”
which was sponsored by the Copper Development Association. HIWT wishes both Patrick and
Colton continued success in their welding careers.
