ASPIRING WELDER
KILLED IN AFGHANISTAN
A young, aspiring welder was killed July 19 in Kandahar,
Afghanistan, according to the U.S. Department of
Defense. Army Private First Class Jeffrey L. Rice, 24, of
th

Troy, Ohio, was part of the 20 Engineer Battalion, 36
Engineer Brigade stationed out of Fort Hood, Texas and
was providing combat engineering support for Operation
Enduring Freedom.
Jeffrey was a 2007 graduate of Troy High School and
Upper Valley Career Center where he completed the
welding program and played high school football. He
had earned a scholarship to continue his welding career
at Hobart Institute, but decided to first serve his country
by enlisting, hoping to further his welding career in the
Army. His vocational school instructor, Alan Wuebker,
remembers Jeff as an attentive, respectful, hardworking
student who always talked about serving in the military.
Jeffrey is the son of Sandra Hartman Rice Wheelock and
the late Bruce L. Rice of Troy. Hobart Institute extends
sincere condolences to Jeffrey’s family.
