SCOTT CRAMER USES WELDING TO EARN EAGLE SCOUT STATUS
Along the Rails to Trails bicycle path beginning in
Hilliard, Ohio, Scott Cramer constructed and installed
five metal sculptures in the park as part of his Eagle Scout
project. The long-lasting metal art replaces the former
wooden ones that had been damaged over a number of
years.
Keeping the same theme and basic design of the original
characters in athletic positions, Scott outlined and plasma
cut ¼-inch carbon steel plate. He made two mirror image
pieces for each character. Scott then welded a 1-inch x
1-inch square tubing “skeleton” between the plates. He
had the metal acid-etched so the colorful paint he added
on each piece would better adhere to the metal and
withstand abuse of weather, vandalism, and time.
Scott received much cooperation from his welding
instructor at Tolles Technical Center, Bill Pencil, along
with support from the City of Hilliard.
As a side-note, at the request of another local resident, Scott
also created a sunflower that is installed in the Hilliard Mayor’s
garden.
Scott continued his welding education in the Combination
Structural and Pipe Welding Program at Hobart Institute of
Welding Technology and graduated March 29, 2013 and is
pursuing his career in welding.
