Interested in applying for scholarships but don’t know where to start? Scholarships can be awarded from anywhere that is offering a
scholarship. Check with your high school counselor, your school’s financial aid office, employer of student and/or parent, local chamber
of commerce, organizations related to your field of interest, and multiple of other locations. For more information on scholarship search
tips visit www.studentaid.gov. Be cautious, never pay to complete, submit or receive scholarships.

            Scholarships Can Make the Difference

Trevor Elston, current HIWT student knows very well how much of a difference getting scholarships
can make. Currently he has received 13 scholarships totaling nearly $12,000, ranging from $200 to
$2500 each, with others still pending. That is almost three quarters of the cost of his tuition here at the
Institute. I spoke with Trevor to see how he went about finding the scholarships. He said he checked
his high school guidance office as well as the guidance office at his local career center. He also filled
out the scholarship application here at the school (which will be awarded in May 2018) so there may be
even more money coming his way.
Scholarships can come from just about anywhere. Local clubs such as the Moose, Eagles or VFW award
scholarships as well as churches or any local group. It is important to do the digging early to determine
when the deadlines for scholarship are and to keep track of any and all that you apply for. Visit www.
welding.org then student tab and financial aid/scholarship tab for more information. Trevor Elston
