Instructor Receives Prestigious Honor from Welding Students
By: Melinda Jeffery
DJ DeHart, welding instructor for Hobart Institute conducted a specialized training
class in Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (TIG) for some members of the US Navy. The training
consisted of learning the basics of TIG welding on mild steel, stainless steel and
aluminum. At completion of the training, the group presented DJ with a Challenge Coin
and Flag for going above and beyond during the two week course. DJ was extremely
humbled by receiving such a prestigious honor from those who have sacrifced so much.
I was shocked and overwhelmed by the gesture. I grew up with family who served
in the military and it was such an honor to be recognized by this outstanding group of
men, stated DJ.
The history of the Challenge Coin and its uses vary depending on what website you
read. Stories range from use in World War I to World War II and have been used by
Presidents who have given them to foreign diplomats or military during Presidential
visits. However it started, all the sites agreed on the use that was applicable here - they
are occasionally given to non-military personnel for outstanding service or reward. HIWT
thanks DJ for his exceptional performance in teaching the class, and especially thanks
those who took time from their duties protecting our country to attend training at HIWT.

Advisory Committee. Students enrolled in
this 70 hour course will develop the skills
necessary for entrance into the high demand
aerospace industry. During the course students
will work with typical materials, weld joint
confgurations and tools involved in production
and testing within aerospace manufacturing
and repair. Course guidelines will be taught
and welds inspected in accordance with
