HIWT Announces Retirement of Jim Starry
After nearly 46 years of service, Jim Starry retired effective May 1, 2019. There have been
thousands of lives touched by the man who, when asked how he was, would respond fner than
frog hair split three ways. Jim always had a smile on his face and a twinkle in his blue eyes
which sometimes led to wondering what he was up to!
Jim taught a multitude of classes over the course of his career, focusing mainly on anything Shielded
Metal Arc Welding (Stick) on both plate and pipe. Jim also taught the elective classes of Pipe
Layout for Pipeftters and Welders and Shielded Metal Arc Welding Pipe Downhill.
Past students, chiming in on social media, described him as patient, best instructor ever to be
in a booth and had this to say: Always smiling and happy. Thanks for your time and patience
with all of us learning our trade. Around campus, Jim was always ready to lend a helping hand to
students as well as other instructors. Charles Carpenter, Director of Skill Education had Jim as an
instructor when he attended here and had this to say: Jim Starry touched many lives while at the
Institute, both students and instructors alike. Many of our instructors trained as students under Jim
in stick pipe and later in our careers were mentored and trained as welding instructors by him. Jims
unwavering positive attitude and personality had a positive effect on everyone he came in contact
with. We wish him and Lois many years of health and a joy flled retirement.
Jim was a long time (42 years) instructor at the Institute. His career was dedicated to teaching
others the skill of welding and its immeasurable the amount of impact he made on the lives and
careers of those he taught said Scott Mazzulla, President & CEO. The Institutes great reputation
today is because of educators like Jim. We certainly wish him the best in his well-deserved
retirement.
HIWT Attends FFA State Conference
By: Emily Fox
Members of HIWTs career development team
attended the Ohio State FFA Convention at
the beginning of May in Columbus, Ohio. The
team set up an interactive booth complete
with a Miller Augmented Arc welder so the
students could try their hand at MIG welding.
The students had a great time competing
with each other to see who could get the
highest score and of course, bragging rights.
We are always excited to see familiar faces
as well as meeting new ones. Both the state
and national FFA convention are our favorites
to work because the students are polite and
love to engage. We look forward to attending
the national convention in October.
