            Learning about Goods and Services

            By: April Wise
I had the pleasure of speaking to many
            second grade students at Demmitt
Elementary in Vandalia OH on January
            29, 2019. I attended a Goods and
            Services event where many people
came in and had the opportunity to talk
to the students about what they did
for a living and whether or not their
profession was a good or a service
to the community. I presented to two
            individual classes and every student
was fully engaged, asking many really
good questions. The best one was what
was my age when I frst started my
welding career 5 years ago? Then they
all had to answer to the teacher what
my current age is. Several students had
knowledge of welding and a pretty good idea what it was because of their parents either working in the welding industry or doing it for a
hobby. We talked about how welding is a huge service for the industries in many ways, as well as my background in welding and all the
ways to weld. I showed them welding pieces of GTAW and GMAW on mild steel, aluminum and stainless. A lot of the students said that
the SMAW electrodes looked like a pencil. Having no homework while in a program at HIWT was the best thing they liked to hear. I think I
may have recruited a future police offcer and a YouTube star who now want to attend HIWT when they graduate in 2031.
