Introducing Moonscape Artist Tess Little

Hobart Institute of Welding Technology sponsors events throughout our community
on a regular basis. This year, Troy Main Street presented a Sculpture on the Square
exhibit showcasing artists throughout the United States. The Institute sponsored a
sculpture titled "Moonscape" that is the creation of local sculptor, Tess Little.
Tess is from Fairborn Ohio. She is a graduate of Fairborn High School, received her
Bachelor of Fine Arts from Wright State University in Dayton and her Masters of
Fine Art from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, MI. She is a retired
sculpture professor from Sinclair Community College in Dayton and is an active
       member of the art community.

Tess began making things as a small child, but it wasn't until she started working
with clay at Fairborn High School that began her love of sculpting. Making
sculptures became her passion. She works with clay, bronze, welded steel and
concrete as she creates her masterpieces. Many of Tess's pieces incorporate the
moon. She explains "I love the moon! This series about the Moon has been a joy to
develop over the past ten years. I do other sculptures too, but often come back to
this subject because it touches my heart." In addition to Moonscape, she sculpted
a piece titled "Moon Spirit" which "explores the sacred movement of the moon
across an undulating landscape. The moon gently caresses the hills and valleys of
an earthly landscape, creating a path to guide us on our life journeys.”
In addition to her moon sculptures, she creates both large-scale sculptures for
public places and smaller artwork for private homes. She has also facilitated
several large permanent community art projects in the Dayton, Ohio area. She has
exhibited her artwork in both one person and group shows in the Midwest region
for many years and has artwork in many private collections.
I asked Tess what she would tell an inspiring sculptor and she responded "Be Tess Little with Moonscape
persistent. If you love what you do, don't give up". Tess's works are as inspiring as
her words of encouragement for those that are interested in becoming a sculptor.
Moonscape is currently being displayed in Troy, OH in front of City Hall, Moon
Spirit is on display as part of the Sculpt Fusion exhibit through 2025 in Michigan
City, IN and Full Moon Rising is on display as part of the 21st Annual Chicago
Sculpture Exhibition in the city of Chicago through 2024.
