Checking in with HIWT Alumni: Kevin Flentye
I graduated from Hobart in 2010. My frst year out of school I was a
pipe welder at a chemical plant near my home town of Ridgecrest,
CA. After that I decided to put a welding truck together and try to
get a test for a pipeline contractor. I relocated to Bakersfeld, CA
and started working for a new construction pipeline company in
September of 2011.
The training I learned at Hobart gave me a big head start. I was
lucky enough to work with a few journeyman welders that had 25
plus years in the feld. If you have the right attitude and the will to
learn, they will teach you the tricks of the trade.
In June of 2015 I decided to join a pipeline union, United
Association local 246 out of Fresno, CA. With the support of my
union I have passed my welding test for Pacifc Gas and Electric, the
biggest utility company in California. Im working in the Bay Area
with some of the best welders and skilled tradesmen in California. I
continue to learn and refne my skills every day.
My best advice is to stay humble, never stop learning, and take
pride in your work.
