Visiting Schools the New Way
By: Calvin Scharrer
Times have changed since academic year 2019/2020. Last year,
you may have had a representative from HIWT come to visit your
program to talk to your welding students. Now, the new normal is
seeing everyone through a computer screen. Some High School/
Career Technical welding instructors are very fond of seeing
our faces come to their schools and present about our welding
programs and the opportunities for their students after high school.
But 2020 has turned out to be a different (some might even say
difficult) year. For the instructor, adjusting curriculum to online
versus in person has been somewhat challenging. Many of the
schools we visit started virtually for the first two weeks or so, then
in person or even a combination of both. The million dollar question
was: Can we teach a hands on trade virtually, and the resounding
answer we got from instructors was “Well, we are sure going to
give it a try”.
Making the best of a bad situation, instructors have been busy
instructing students via virtual learning and showing how to weld
via video camera. One way HIWT has adjusted to not being able to
visit schools in person is by setting up Zoom presentations about
the Institute. This gives students an inside look at our programs and
a virtual tour of the school. We can send a link to the instructor
for them to forward to students who are at home learning. If
you would like more information on getting a virtual tour for your
students, please reach out to the school at:
DL_tours@welding.org. We are set up and ready to “visit” your
school.
