HIWT Attends 92nd Annual National FFA Convention
            By April Wise
            On October 29 – November 1, 2019 the Career
Development team from HIWT attended the 92nd
Annual FFA Convention & Expo which was held at the
Indiana Convention Center. Nearly 70,000 people were
expected in attendance. FFA members from all over
the United States came to talk to different types of
industries, colleges and encountered many hands on
activities. HIWT had the opportunity to set up a display
booth where we saw many students from all over the
USA. Students had the chance to test their welding
skills with the Gas Metal Arc Welding process utilizing
the Miller Augmented Arc Welder. Many attendees
even competing with others; coming back to get a
better score. Staff from HIWT were able to talk with
almost 500 potential students inquiring about careers
opportunities in welding, the programs available and
            AWS® certifications offered at HIWT.
Making it my personal goal to meet students from as
many states as possible made the event even more
exciting. During my three days there, I spoke with
students from 46 different states about their individual
goals and what they liked about being a part of FFA. It
was great to hear the about their various backgrounds
and reasons for attending the convention.
Calvin Scharrer and Emily Fox made connections with
new schools and instructors wanting to either bring their students for a visit or have them come speak at their school to educate the students on Hobart
            Institute and careers in welding.
