Summer 2022
                                     “Welder Bob” is about

                                     Transferring Knowledge

                                     Welder Bob has been moved!
At Hobart Institute of Welding Technogy’s 80th
anniversary celebration in 2010, a sculpture
was dedicated. The sculpture was to honor
Bob Bercaw, Hobart Trade School’s first welding
instructor and was rightfully named “Welder
                                     Bob”.

As I have learned through expereince, honoring
something as the “first” only keeps you in the
past. Hobart Institute is about the “now” and
      By Scott A. Mazzulla, President
Hobart Institute of Welding Technology the “future” of students. The symbolism of
                                     Welder Bob should honor
all. Yes, Bob Bercaw was the
                                     school’s first instructor, but
what it honors more, are the lives he touched when he taught the skill of
welding. It was that commitment to transfer his knowledge into someone
else and pass that life changing skill to others.
Welder Bob represents all the welding instructors that have committed
their time to transfering their knowledge to the thousands of students
coming through our doors. It also honors every man and woman that has
chosen the career path to educate others in welding. High schools, career
centers, community colleges, trade schools, and corporate classrooms all
have dedicated educators that transfer their knowledge to others every
     day.
Recently, the Institure donated the Unity of Man Foutain Scuplture to the
Miami County Park District. Its was given to Hobart Brothers Company in
1967 to commmorate Hobart Brothers Company’s 50th anniversary. The
five sphere sculpture was a symbol that represented 50 years of being in
business with each sphere representing ten years. It paid homage to the
sustainable business success of Hobart Brothers.
We have now moved Welder Bob to take the place of the fountain sculpture. Welder Bob truly
represents what this great school is all about. While our history is well preserved and not
forgotten, we are focoused on our student’s success and preparing for the thousands that have
                                                   yet to arrive.
We have a Vision that is simple “ Deliver High Quality Welding Education”. Our quality
starts and ends with the incredable staff at Hobart Institute. Welder Bob honors our team of
instructors and industry peers who transfer their knowledge to future generations of welders.
