George Junior Republic, a large non-profit residential treatment
facility for young men ages 8-18, provides academic and
vocational education and training to youth through a partnership
with the Grove City Area School District. Located in Grove City,
Pennsylvania, students of the William H. Gladden Career and
Technical Center welding program have used their skills to fabricate
ten very intriguing sculptures for their town to assist in identifying
public parking places.
The project began with the Grove City Arts Council’s interest in
bringing public art into the western Pennsylvania community.
In 2009, community residents partnered with George Junior
Republic and decided the best way to begin the economic and
community revitalization was through the creation of metal public
art sculptures. This project included collaboration among George
Junior’s afterschool arts program (Art20), merchants from Olde Town
Grove City and funding from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts/
Erie Arts and Culture. George Junior Republic artist-in-residence
and sculptor Ron Bayuzick was involved in the design and placement
of the sculptures. Based on the success of the program, the
Pointing The Way project has expanded into other communities in
the state.
