The POINTING THE WAY PROJECT Gives Back
By: Glen Sanders
The Pointing the Way Project (PTW) was started back in 2010 when
George Junior Republic partnered with Grove City School District
and the borough of Grove City to create public art in the form of
sculptural parking signs throughout the business district. That was
a five year partnership and as we were winding down I was hoping
that we would be able to continue creating sculptures because
of the impact it has on all the students involved in designing and
creating them. At one of the unveilings, the city manager of Sharon,
PA was present and later contacted us about making a sculpture
for their community. This opened a whole new opportunity for us
to create public a sculpture for another community. That lead us
to open this opportunity to other communities, organizations and
businesses that loved what we were doing and wanted public art.
The sculpture that we are working on now will be placed at the Hill
View Elementary school in Grove City. This sculpture is a tribute
to a former teacher who recently retired from the school and lost
her fight with cancer. The teacher, Mrs. Cooper, would teach her
fourth grade students how important manners and values are. Every
year her class would perform a musical entitled Character Matters,
written by Ron Fink and John Heath. The musical combined a whole
bunch of fairytale characters that get together at their monthly
Fairy Tale Advice Council to help other fairytale characters to do the
right thing. All the fourth graders designed ideas for this sculpture
