The Day of the Fearless Females
By Janet Piechocki
Southeastern Career Center, located in Versailles, Indiana hosted Fearless
Female Non-traditional Career Pathway Day on February 21st for 8th and
9th grade females. There were approximately 300 females attending this
event. The experience was meant to encourage young women to explore
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) and other non-traditional
career pathways by presenting a female only interactive workshop that
included hands-on demonstrations and a panel of female speakers from
different male-dominated career fields. Students were encouraged to try
their hand at Construction, Manufacturing, Health, Culinary, Cosmetology,
Media, Public Safety, Transportation and Technology pathways. Teachers
Casey Jones and Jason Edwards headed up the welding area with several
young women from their classes and Janet Piechocki presented different
pathways we have to offer at Hobart Institute of Welding Technology and
where those pathways can lead to great paying careers.
