UNCOVERING KOKOPELLI
Several years ago, Hobart Institute Vice President Scott
Mazzulla created an artistic, welded sculpture in the likeness
of Kokopelli. The piece, pictured on the right, was later
put into storage and forgotten. Recently, the piece surfaced
once again and Scott has provided it on loan for the welded
sculpture collection at HIWT.
Scott hails from Arizona and Kokopelli is a symbol of the
American Southwest. Known as a fertility god, prankster,
healer, and story teller, this traveling, hunched-back, flute-
player is a sacred figure to many Native Americans. Carvings
of Kokopelli, dating back of 3000 years, have been found on
rock walls and boulders throughout the Southwest. While
there are many legends surrounding the flutist, Kokopelli
has been the source of dancing and music-making, spreading
warmth and joy to those around him.

VISUAL INSPECTION ONLINE
(Continued from page 4)
I am looking forward to my next online course through
Hobart Institute. The courses are basically inexpensive and
keep those of us who have been out of the field informed
and professional in our instruction. In turn, we can pass
that information along to our students, making them better
prepared to attend postsecondary education at facilities like
Hobart Institute of Welding Technology and better welders to
industry. It is most important that instructors stay current with
courses for welding educators that are being offered through
HIWT if we want to continue to fill the void currently being
experienced in our craft.
Welding is no longer just put down the shield and make a
high quality deposit. Welders today must have knowledge
of procedures; understand the necessity of preheating and
post heating, the inspection requirements and how to use the
tools of our trade. I would encourage everyone, welder and
instructor, to educate themselves with the Hobart courses
offered online and at their facility in Troy Ohio, to make
ourselves more valuable to the employer and the customer.
