It’s Never too Late to Learn

From Union Bricklayer to Union Welder, to Biomedical Engineer, Martin (Marty) Betjemann
has had a very colorful career. Marty is a student at Hobart Institute of Welding
Technology currently taking Gas Metal Arc Welding and is planning to take Gas Tungsten
Arc Welding as well. And at 79 years young, Marty claims “Life is just starting”.
Marty served in the US Navy from 1963 – 1969 aboard a nuclear submarine as an
Engineering Lab Technician testing reactor water. After separating from the military, Marty
lived in Illinois and was a Union Bricklayer but worked for a company that did welding
and other trades as well. He thought welding looked interesting and with permission of
his employer, came to HIWT in the 1970’s and took the Combination Structural and Pipe
Welding Program. Upon completion, he went back to the union, but was a welder. As
technology changed, he was approached by his employer and asked if he wanted to get
more education, and of course Marty said yes. He attended Illinois State University and
received Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Technology. He then went to work as a
Biomedical Engineer doing medical equipment repair, sometimes even while surgery was
happening. He did this for 20+ years traveling all over the country before he “retired”.
Marty currently resides in Florida where he plans to build Geodisic Domes after completing
his TIG and MIG training at Hobart Institute. In his spare time, Marty is a glass blower
selling his creations at festivals throughout his area.
