All in a Day’s Work

As summer fades into fall, students head back to school after a much-
deserved summer break and the Career Development team hits the road
       for school visits and events.
The team attended two Construction Career Days this fall, one in
Shelbyville, KY and the other in Murray, KY. Both events highlight the
various careers that are available in the construction industry. There was
heavy equipment, concrete, plumbing, masonry, and of course welding
along with several other areas represented.
The first trip was to Shelbyville, KY which is just south of Louisville. This
Construction Career event was sponsored by K4C, a trade education
affiliate to Kentucky’s construction industry. The event, which was held
September 20 – 21 took place at the Shelbyville Fairgrounds and was
attended by nearly 3,000 vocational and technical school students from
across the state. Employers from the Construction Trades, educational
facilities and even the United States Military attended the event to recruit
and expose students to the many opportunities that are available in the
       construction field.
The next stop was the Construction Career Day held at Murray State in
Murray, KY on October 20th. This event is sponsored by the Associated
General Contractors of Western Kentucky and is held annually. The
event brought out various trade unions, well known heavy equipment
and construction companies as well as educational facilities and Military
       recruiters.
At both events, the team spoke with hundreds of students about careers
in welding, the various industries served, and the programs offered at
Hobart Institute of Welding. The team gave students the opportunity to
“weld” in a virtual setting competing against each other for the highest
score of the day. Some students who had never welded before did great,
while some who were in welding classes already didn’t fare quite as well.
It was a great experience seeing how the students interacted and how
excited they got about the opportunity to weld in a safe and controlled
       way.
